The MAL Interactors Animator: Supporting model validation through animation
The IVY workbench is a model checking based tool for the analysis of interactive system designs. Experience shows that there is a need to complement the analytic power of model checking with support for model validation and analysis of verification results. Animation of the model provides this support by allowing iterative exploration of its behaviour. This paper introduces a new model animation plugin for the IVY workbench. The plugin (AniMAL) complements the modelling and verification capabilities of IVY by providing users with the possibility to interact directly with the model.The authors wish to thank Michael D. Network Connections in REIT Markets
Relationships play a central role across the spectrum of real estate transactions. Whether negotiating prices, securing funding, or acquiring permits, knowing the right people provides multiple channels to facilitate deal making. To better understand the role of relationships in real estate markets, we examine how the connectedness of REIT directors is associated with deal making, growth, and profitability. We find strong evidence that REIT connections are positively associated with both deal making and accounting based measures of profitability, however, those relations do not translate into better market returns or higher valuations. One explanation of these somewhat contradictory results is that connections also increase firm risk. Preliminary support for this conjecture is found through our examination of each firmâs implied cost of equity capital. Specifically, we find increasing connectedness is associated with a higher cost of equity capital. Thus, connections appear to offer both advantages and disadvantages to REIT managers and shareholders
The NuSTAR Extragalactic Surveys: unveiling rare, buried AGNs and detecting the contributors to the peak of the Cosmic X-ray Background
We report on the results of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detection by NuSTAR
performed in three extragalactic survey fields (COSMOS, UDS, ECDFS) in three
hard bands, namely H1 (8-16 keV), H2 (16-24 keV) and VH (35-55 keV). The
aggregated area of the surveys is deg. While a large number of
sources is detected in the H1 band (72 at the level of reliability), the
H2 band directly probing close to the peak of the Cosmic X-ray Background (CXB)
returns four significant detections, and two tentative, although not
significant, detections are found in the VH band. All the sources detected
above 16 keV are also detected at lower energies. We compute the integral
number counts for sources in such bands, which show broad consistency with
population synthesis models of the CXB. We furthermore identify two
Compton-thick AGNs, one in the COSMOS field, associated with a hard and faint
Chandra source, and one in the UDS field, never detected in the X-ray band
before. Both sources are at the same redshift , which shifts their
Compton-hump into the H1 band, and were previously missed in the usually
employed NuSTAR bands, confirming the potential of using the H1 band to

A Connection between Obscuration and Star Formation in Luminous Quasars
We present a measurement of the star formation properties of a uniform sample of mid-IR selected, unobscured and obscured quasars (QSO1s and QSO2s) in the Bo\ otes survey region. We use an spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis for photometric data spanning optical to far-IR wavelengths to decompose AGN and host galaxy components. We find that when compared to a matched sample of QSO1s, the QSO2s have higher far-IR detection fractions, far-IR fluxes and infrared star formation luminosities (LSFIR) by a factor of âŒ2. Correspondingly, we show that the AGN obscured fraction rises from 0.3 to 0.7 between 4â40Ă1011Lâ. We also find evidence associating the absorption in the X-ray emission with the presence of far-IR emitting dust. Overall, these results are consistent with galaxy evolution models in which quasar obscurations can be associated with a dust-enshrouded starburst galaxie
Low State, Phase-Resolved IR Spectroscopy of VV Puppis
We present phase-resolved low resolution and higher resolution -band
spectroscopy of the polar VV Pup. All observations were obtained when VV Pup
was in a low accretion state having a K magnitude near 15. The low resolution
observations reveal cyclotron emission in the band during some phases,
consistent with an origin near the active 30.5 MG pole on the white dwarf. The
secondary in VV Pup appears to be a normal M7V star and we find that the
and band fluxes are entirely due to this star at all orbital phases during
the low accretion state. We use our higher resolution Keck spectroscopy to
produce the first -band radial velocity curve for VV Pup. Our orbital
solution yields =414 km sec and leads to mass estimates of
M=0.730.05 M and M=0.100.02 M. We find
that the mass accretion rates during the normal low states of the polars VV
Pup, EF Eri, and EQ Cet are near 10 M yr. The fact
that \.M is not zero in low state polars indicates active secondary stars in
these binary systems, including the sub-stellar donor star present in EF Eri.Comment: Accepted in Astronomical Journal 5 figure
Grey matter volume differences in the left caudate nucleus of people who stutter.
The cause of stuttering has many theoretical explanations. A number of research groups have suggested changes in the volume and/or function of the striatum as a causal agent. Two recent studies in children and one in adults who stutter (AWS) report differences in striatal volume compared that seen in controls; however, the laterality and nature of this anatomical volume difference is not consistent across studies. The current study investigated whether a reduction in striatal grey matter volume, comparable to that seen in children who stutter (CWS), would be found in AWS. Such a finding would support claims that an anatomical striatal anomaly plays a causal role in stuttering. We used voxel-based morphometry to examine the structure of the striatum in a group of AWS and compared it to that in a group of matched adult control subjects. Results showed a statistically significant group difference for the left caudate nucleus, with smaller mean volume in the group of AWS. The caudate nucleus, one of three main structures within the striatum, is thought to be critical for the planning and modulation of movement sequencing. The difference in striatal volume found here aligns with theoretical accounts of stuttering, which suggest it is a motor control disorder that arises from deficient articulatory movement selection and sequencing. Whilst the current study provides further evidence of a striatal volume difference in stuttering at the group level compared to controls, the significant overlap between AWS and controls suggests this difference is unlikely to be diagnostic of stuttering
Glacial lakes of the Central and Patagonian Andes
The prevalence and increased frequency of high-magnitude Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in the Chilean and Argentinean Andes suggests this region will be prone to similar events in the future as glaciers continue to retreat and thin under a warming climate. Despite this situation, monitoring of glacial lake development in this region has been limited, with past investigations only covering relatively small regions of Patagonia. This study presents new glacial lake inventories for 1986, 2000 and 2016, covering the Central Andes, Northern Patagonia and Southern Patagonia. Our aim was to characterise the physical attributes, spatial distribution and temporal development of glacial lakes in these three sub-regions using Landsat satellite imagery and image datasets available in Google Earth and Bing Maps. Glacial lake water volume was also estimated using an empirical area-volume scaling approach. Results reveal that glacial lakes across the study area have increased in number (43%) and areal extent (7%) between 1986 and 2016. Such changes equate to a glacial lake water volume increase of 65?km3 during the 30-year observation period. However, glacial lake growth and emergence was shown to vary sub-regionally according to localised topography, meteorology, climate change, rate of glacier change and the availability of low gradient ice areas. These and other factors are likely to influence the occurrence of GLOFs in the future. This analysis represents the first large-scale census of glacial lakes in Chile and Argentina and will allow for a better understanding of lake development in this region, as well as, providing a basis for future GLOF risk assessments.authorsversionPeer reviewe
First results of the BATSE/COMPTEL/NMSU rapid burst response campaign
The Imaging Compton Telescope (COMPTEL) on board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory regularly observes gammaâray bursts which occur inside the instrumentâs âŒ1 sr fieldâofâview. COMPTEL images bursts in the 0.75â30 MeV energy range with a typical location accuracy of 1â3 degrees, depending on burst strength, position, duration, and spectrum. COMPTELâs imaging capability has been exploited in order to search for fading gammaâray burst counterparts at other wavelengths through the establishment of a BATSE/COMPTEL/NMSU rapid burst response campaign. This campaign utilizes near realâtime identification and preliminary burst location by BATSE, accelerated COMPTEL imaging, and a worldâwide network of observers to search COMPTEL error boxes as quickly as possible. Timely, deep searches for lingering counterpart emission of several bursts per year are the realized goal of this campaign. During its first year of operation, the rapid response program has been successfully applied to two strong bursts: GRB 930131 and GRB 930309. These bursts were imaged in record time only hours after their occurrence. Subsequently, several observations were made at radio and optical observatories worldâwide
